The Millennium Award Project

Forging Art: the Foundry and the Artist meet

In 2003 Emma tackled a Project sponsored by Millennium Awards and run in conjunction with the Royal Incorporation of Architects, Scotland, (R.I.A.S.), designed to encourage artistic development through work in the Community.

In this Project Emma encouraged children to discover and record visually the dramatic work inside a local iron foundry and to learn something of the industry. The chosen School was Broughton Primary School, Edinburgh and the foundry nearby was C Laing & Sons' Foundry. The children's sketches and drawings were pieced together under her inspirational guidance to create a mural which was placed in the school grounds.

Emma's work with the children, observing and sketching the working life in the foundry, inspired her own artistic imagination. By expressive use of colour and light her observations were transformed into creative works on the theme of "Transformations". This was the title which she chose for her exhibition in January 2004 at the R.I.A.S. gallery in Edinburgh, which marked the completion of her Millennium Award Project.
